Ingredients:

Keep in mind you will need to adjust the counts accordingly to meet your Tailgate Teams actual numbers.

  • 10 bratwursts (raw, see note 1)

  • 1 large onion thinly sliced

  • 4 (12 ounce) cans beer (see note 2)

  • 10 brat buns split, for serving

  • Ketchup and mustard, for serving

  • sauerkraut for serving (see note 3)

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill over medium-high heat. Clean and oil grate. In a large pot over medium-high heat, add brats, onion, and beer.

  2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until brats are cooked through, about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove brats to a bowl or platter. Continue cooking onions in beer while grilling the brats (use as a topping if desired).

  3. Increase heat to medium and cook brats, turning frequently, until browned, about 5 minutes. Serve in buns with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  1. Bratwurst: We like to start with raw Brats rather than the pre-cooked sausages for this recipe as this allows all of the flavor to cook into the Brats. Just be careful and insure that you cook the meat to the correct temp of 160 degrees.

  2. Beer: While we have recommendations, you can’t go wrong with your favorite beer here. We literally use whatever the 21 and up crowd bring to the Tailgate which can easily span a huge gap in type and brand of beer. If beer is at a premium for your Tailgate and you can’t spare the full amount to boil the Brats in you can substitute water for a portion of the beer.

  3. Yield: This Beer Brat recipe makes 10 brats. You will need to ramp the ingredients up or down to fit your Tailgate size.

  4. Make ahead: Highly recommend boiling the Brats at home until done and placing in the refrigerator overnight. You can transport in a cooler and simply throw on the grill to warm them up and give them the mandatory grill marks. You can also make them the morning of the game and place them in a slow cooker keeping them warm until you're ready to serve.
